Crime reduction advice

It would be better for everyone if plant and equipment was not stolen in the first place.  Owners and users play their part in cracking down on plant crime by using the advice set out below to stop theft before it happens, and this includes registering the fleet with TER.  If it does get stolen, you should notify TER once you have told the police.  Once the stolen equipment is ‘in trade’, all those involved in the trading of equipment need to make a TER Check before they buy, sell, finance or insure equipment.

Loss Prevention Guide.  TER has produced an 18 page crime reduction document which includes many examples of low cost, practical risk mitigation options for equipment owners and users.  Click here to download.

TER Registration.  Manufacturers and owners as well as banks have registered their sales data, ownership and interest in plant and equipment because TER makes the data available to the police 24/7, and works to raise awareness of plant and equipment theft amongst the police and law enforcement agencies.  To register an entire fleet (11+ items) with TER for a year costs a quarter of one satellite tracking device, and less than the cost of marking one machine with an overt marking scheme.  For more information see TER Registration.

Decals.  Decals, number plates and overt marking systems do not stop equipment being stolen and are no assistance to the recovery of stolen equipment as they have usually been removed or replaced by the criminal.  However, they do raise a question in the mind of the thief which may cause him to look elsewhere.  TER produces two decals for equipment owners to use as a theft deterrent and for police awareness about TER registration.  Manufacturers such as Ifor Williams use the decals on all their trailers.  Call TER for your decals.

TER Check.  When you realise that more than £1M of plant and equipment is stolen every week in the UK alone, and that most plant and equipment will be on some form of finance, the necessity of doing a TER Check prior to purchase - or sale for auctions - becomes startlingly obvious.  For more information see TER Check.

TER Theft Registration.  Anyone from whom plant and equipment is stolen should register the theft with TER in order to improve the opportunities for it being recovered.  For more information see TER Theft Registration
